Music, film and dancing will be central to the golden anniversary celebrations of Rickmansworth’s Watersmeet theatre, it has been announced.
Watersmeet theatre is marking a major milestone this year as it celebrates 50 years of bringing entertainment and the community together. The venue - which opened in May 1975 - is turning back the clock and transforming into a nostalgic tribute to the vibrant 1970s with a series of exciting events throughout the year.
The festivities begin this February half-term with exclusive Venue Tours, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the history and legacy of Watersmeet. Film lovers can immerse themselves in the golden age of cinema with a '70s Film Festival, running from 17 February to 27 March, featuring four iconic films and their remakes.
A Community Fun Day for all ages will take place on May Bank Holiday (Monday, 5 May), featuring traditional fairground activities, giant games and inflatables, dance displays, vintage refreshments and market stalls with local crafts and goodies.
Fans of '70s funk, soul, groove and disco will have a chance to hit the dance floor at the electrifying '70s Disco, where Watersmeet will be transformed into Rickmansworth’s answer the Studio 54 – the iconic New York nightclub of the era.
Also in June, Watersmeet is presenting a Traditional Tea Dance hosted by Mr Wonderful, complete with refreshments, perfect for those who enjoy a touch of elegance and a classic waltz, foxtrot, tango or cha cha cha to the sounds of a dance band.
To round off the celebrations in October Watersmeet will be hosting a Fun Bingo afternoon - a family-friendly day full of laughter and prizes.
The 515 seat theatre is owned by Three Rivers District Council. The venue’s main auditorium incorporates a unique floor which can transform from a fully tilted theatre style set-up to a flat floor and even a dance floor at the push of a button.
Ben Terry, Watersmeet Manager, said: “I warmly invite everyone to come and celebrate Watersmeet’s big birthday! Fifty years is quite a remarkable achievement, and I want the celebration to be something for everyone.”
Josh Sills, Head of Customer Experience at the council, added: “Whether you like classic 1970s cinema, bingo, big bands or disco – do come to Watersmeet this year and be part of our golden anniversary, because the best parties last all year.”
These fantastic events are proudly supported by the Friends of Watersmeet Society, a dedicated group that meets every other month at the theatre to help support and preserve this beloved venue.
