Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden’s Ecological Park proves summer hit
After almost twelve months of preparation, landscaping and planting the Gypsy Lane field, in Leavesden, has blossomed into a beautiful area of public open space to be enjoyed by the local community.
Planning permission for the expansion of the studio, granted by Three Rivers District Council, included wide-ranging ecological and habitat enhancement works to the field creating an accessible green space with a range of ecological and environmental benefits.
Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden is committed to creating greener areas around the studio, and the Gypsy Lane field, which is already becoming well established, now offers a rich environment for wildlife.
Biodiversity and habitat works include the formation of hibernacula and log piles for invertebrates; the provision of new bat, bird and raptor boxes; areas for ground nesting birds and the creation of a swale and shallow pond.
The northern part of the field now includes new areas of woodland and hedgerows; fruit trees, English Oaks and areas landscaped and seeded to create a variety of different habitats. As well as ensuring works were conducted with sensitivity to the resident skylarks, the southern part of the site also maintains grassland to accommodate the birds which have been a feature of the field since intensive agriculture was ceased. By encouraging wildlife to the area and investing in planting, it has become a wonderful place for residents to access and engage with nature. As the space is only accessible by foot, the integrity of the area has been protected and remains vehicle free.
Emily Stillman, SVP WBSL said: “It’s fantastic to see this field become established as an area for nature; attracting wildlife and creating a beautiful place for residents from the local area to enjoy.”
Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, the Leader of Three Rivers District Council, said: “This is a fascinating ecological enhancement project, and I know it will serve as a great inspiration to the whole district. The efforts put in by Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden will be of great benefit to wildlife and residents alike. Warner Bros. continues to work cooperatively and hand in hand with Three Rivers District Council in supporting our climate change agenda and this latest enhancement is a such a positive move.”
