Hundreds of students and jobseekers attend careers fair

More than a thousand job seekers and students learned about the exciting career opportunities in and around Three Rivers and Watford at the latest careers fair.
Three Rivers District Council and Watford Borough Council hosted the Generation Watford & Three Rivers event, partly funded by Innovate UK’s Fast Followers programme and in partnership with the Hertfordshire Careers Hub, at the Watford Woodside Leisure Centre on Monday 31 March.
Forty employers, including Warner Bros. Studios, Skanska, the Army, Watford Community Housing, the district and borough councils, and many others, set up stalls to engage with 1,025 students from local secondary schools in Three Rivers and Watford about a wide range of career, work experience and training opportunities.
The councils also encouraged the employers to engage with the students about sustainability and what opportunities there are in the green sector. Additionally, parents and adults seeking employment or skills development attended the ‘twilight’ session which was open to the public in the late afternoon.
Elen Dolder, Three Rivers District Council’s Climate Change, Sustainability, and Recycling Officer, said: “We have a skilled and talented workforce in our areas that have ample opportunities for our young people to get involved in. It’s important to bring together employers who are always looking out for new talent with students and job seekers to one place to discuss work opportunities.
“As the country transitions to net-zero, it is also important for us as councils to encourage employers to engage with young people on sustainability and green skills. These qualifications will be needed, so having these conversations are truly valuable.”
Lauren Dovey, Economic Development Officer at Watford Borough Council, said: “It was fantastic to see so many young people, job seekers and employers come together for this event. There was a real buzz throughout the day, with students gaining insight into an incredible range of career paths – from film and construction to public service and the green economy. Events like this show the power of partnership working to inspire the next generation and support our local workforce to thrive.”
Shea Costello, Careers Hub Operational Lead at Hertfordshire Futures, said: "Generation Watford and Three Rivers empowered the next generation in Watford and Three Rivers. We were proud to help students bridge the gap between education and the world of work. Together, we inspired ambition, fostered connections, and supported pathways to rewarding careers—helping them find their best next step."
