Poppy wreaths will be laid at war memorials across Three Rivers district on Remembrance Sunday (10 November) and Armistice Day (11 November) to commemorate the end of hostilities on the Western Front and the service and sacrifice of military personnel involved in conflicts since the First World War.

Councillors from all political groups will be representing Three Rivers District Council at services of remembrance across the district, including the Council Chair, Cllr Raj Khiroya, who will attend a service at St John the Evangelist Church in Heronsgate and Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, the Council Leader, who will attend Leavesden War Memorial.

One of the biggest remembrance events in the district took place on Saturday, 2 November when hundreds of people - including the Chair - attended a special Oxhey Jets Poppy Match and remembrance ceremony.

Club founder and general manager, John Elliott BEM said: “The event is of great pride to us bringing the youth and senior sections together to honour our nation’s great service personnel who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. To see such young people wearing the poppy with such pride and understanding is education in itself and raises thousands for the Poppy Appeal”

The match honoured all those who have lost their lives in war, and particularly Private Thomas Lake, from Northwood, who was killed in action while patrolling the Jamal Kowi area of the Nahr-e Saraj district of central Helmand in November 2011. The former Oxhey Jets player has been remembered annually at the team’s poppy matches, which raise money for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

The match is also now held in memory of Captain Tom Sawyer, who was killed in an explosion while taking part in a joint operation with a Danish Battle Group and the Afghan National Army northeast of Gereshk in central Helmand, in 2009.

This year’s opponents for the match were the Royal Navy team.
