Artwork created by people who have been taking part in a special course to help boost mental health and wellbeing has gone on display in Three Rivers.

Mosaics from the Arts on Prescription autumn 2022 course have been permanently installed in the sensory garden at Leavesden Country Park, outside the Leavesden HIVE building. They depict a butterfly and mushrooms, to represent some of the wildlife found in the park. They were created over 12 weeks by a small, targeted group of people who took part in the course.

The group mosaic from the spring 2023 course will be displayed in Croxley Green library as a colourful addition to their space.

‘Making It’ Arts on Prescription is a referral course, funded by Three Rivers District Council, which uses the creative arts to help people feel and live better.

Cllr Chris Lloyd, the council’s Lead Member for Leisure, which includes Health, said: “Stress, anxiety and other circumstances can affect our  health and wellbeing – but there is increasing evidence to show that creativity can make a real difference. Creative activity can help boost self-esteem and confidence and help people to feel valued. Now we can all enjoy the creations from in Leavesden and Croxley Green”

The recent courses have focused on mosaics and have been led by artist Audrey Montet. During the courses, each person works on a personal art project as well as contributing to a collaborative piece of work. All those attending reported an improvement in their mental health and wellbeing.

One attendee said: “‘This course has helped me develop in so many ways, in confidence, self-esteem and my general wellbeing.” Another added: “I have enjoyed the company of other people and the amazing kindness and help by those in charge of the sessions.”
