A key step forward has been made on developing Three Rivers District Council’s and Hertfordshire County Council’s long-term plan on enhancing the walking and cycling network across the district.

Following a public consultation and feedback from residents, the county council and district council have amended proposals on developing the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).

At the General Public Services, Community Safety and Infrastructure Committee meeting on 15 October 2024, members agreed to remove a proposed route across Chorleywood Common and an alternative proposal along Common Road, Chorleywood as well as removal of the proposed modal filter on Shepherds Lane under the M25 and a proposed local cycling route along Chorleywood Bottom will have the modal filter removed. Officers are to explore further along the A404 to St. Clement Danes School from Rickmansworth.

Officers and members have met with Chorleywood Residents Association and Chorleywood Parish Council to discuss suggested alternatives and suggested other changes prior to finalising an agreed plan. Officers will look at minor junction improvements and speed reduction measures to create a safer environment for cyclists and continue to work with local groups on these before presenting any final plans that have to be agreed by Hertfordshire County Council as the highways authority.

The changes agreed also include investigating a new alternative route along Townfield in Rickmansworth and an extension to the route along the A404 to St. Clement Danes School.

Five walking routes in South Oxhey remain unchanged at this stage.

Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Leader of Three Rivers District Council, said: “The LCWIP represents the council’s commitment to developing sustainable transport options and improving active travel infrastructure and feedback from residents has been instrumental in refining these routes. We have always been clear that will not support routes being imposed that residents did not want.”
