Community centre gets vital funds for roof upgrade
Key repair works to a local community centre are set to go ahead thanks to a cash boost from Three Rivers District Council (TRDC).
The Mill End and District Community Association had its Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding request approved by councillors at Full Council in July to undertake repairs at the Mill End Community Centre in Church Lane.
The flat roof needs to be repaired and the building’s electrical system needs to be upgraded to stay compliant with regulations.
A request was originally made for £24,000, however, the Association received a £15,000 grant through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The committee agreed that the council will put forward £9,000 to fill the funding gap.
Maria King, Chair of the Mill End Community Centre committee, said: “Mill End Community Centre are incredibly grateful to TRDC for the generous grant.
"Our roof is in dire need of repair. The centre is an integral part of the community and we are extremely proud of all our volunteers and everything we are able to offer the community
"Being able to have essential repairs carried out will enable to continue to be at the heart of the community. We would like to say thank you from the Centre Team, our volunteers and centre users.”
Deputy Council Leader, Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, added: “It is fantastic that these grants will enable the Association to start making essential repairs to the building.
“I know that the community centre provides excellent and invaluable clubs for many people, including luncheon clubs for the elderly, a weekly community café, and after-school clubs, to name but a few.
“I look forward to seeing the repair work completed that will extend the life of the Mill End Community Centre for years to come.”
