Three Rivers has welcomed the new gateway into one of the jewels of the district following successful installation works.

The brand-new 48.6 metre long and 3 metre wide Rickmansworth Aquadrome pedestrian bridge was lifted into place by a specialist crane over the weekend (15 March and 16 March) by Three Rivers District Council’s specialist contractor Beaver Bridges, New Civil Engineer – Bridge Contractor of the Year.

Generations of residents and visitors will soon be able to use the new bridge, which was funded largely by developer contributions, to access the well-loved nature reserve. As the new bridge is double in width compared to the old one, it will enable pedestrians, wheelchairs, buggies and cyclists to pass each other safely as well as encourage sustainable travel.

Cllr Chris Lloyd, the council’s Lead Member for Leisure, said: “The moment has finally come, the Rickmansworth Aquadrome has a lovely new bridge that caters to all so that everyone can have easy access to our beautiful nature reserve for walks and to experience the unique wildlife.

“We are all eager to start using the new bridge, but the area will need to remain closed to remove the crane pad and to enable the landscaping works at either end. Exciting enhancements will also be made to Ebury Play area in preparation to open the area to the public once again.

“Thank you very much to Beaver Bridges for the amazing work they have done these past few months and to our residents and visitors for their patience and understanding while the last phase of the works is underway. It will be worth it when it is completed. In the meantime, the Aquadrome is still open and can be accessed via the car park, the canal towpath, or by following the established diversion signage.”
