Bike Week, 6-14 June, is an annual celebration to showcase cycling. Thousands of people all over the UK enjoy riding a bike, last year 5,000 people took part and this year, you can too.
Cycling is a great way to travel, keep fit and active, and is a good way to boost immunity, it's also great for your mental well-being. During these uncertain times, helping people to come together to ride is not possible, so a series of fun Bike Week events are being held online this June.
Three Rivers has been making improvements and supporting Bike Week for over 40 years, to make cycling easier. New routes enable people to use their bikes to get around - particularly people who do not usually cycle. Further information about cycling can be found here: www.threerivers.gov.uk/egcl-page/cycling
Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Lead Member for Transport & Economic Development, said: “As a regular cyclist now, it's great to get out and enjoy our beautiful area by bike, especially in the dry weather. Its both fun and healthy. Cycling to work can mean you have a 46% lower risk of developing cancer, and a 46% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. If you cycle regularly, according to facts recently published by Cycling UK, you will enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger.”
“You can cycle alone or with your own household and indeed others as long as you respect the social distancing rules and keep 2 metres apart. Please do respect others and especially those walking and use a bell to make them aware of you and also be courteous and slow down where children or dogs are around to warm. Keep health, stay alert, and stay safe.”
