East-Beary, the bear statue

The Eastbury bear statue has been named by pupils as refurbishment works at the play area have been completed.

The revamped play area at Eastbury Park on Batchworth Lane is ready to be enjoyed this year after it saw a new play tower with monkey rings, log stairs, rope and log tangle, and swings as well as landscaping and planting installed in December 2024.

Three Rivers District Council’s contractor, Earthwright, also installed a new hangout area with comfortable benches that create a safe space for teenagers to hang out.

Students from neighbouring Eastbury Farm Primary School were consulted and engaged in the design process. They were also given the chance to name the stroking bear statue at the play area – with East-Beary being crowned the winner.

Emma Sheridan, Associate Director for Environment, said: “I am delighted to see the Eastbury Play Area reopen with new play equipment and new planting which I know will be enjoyed by children and parents for many years.

“Our play areas are very important to families and children, which is why I am happy that pupils from the nearby school helped shape the refurbishment by sharing their views on the plans as well as for providing a fitting name for the bear statue.

“I would like to thank everyone for their patience while the play area was closed while works were underway, and I thank our contractors and officers for their speed in reopening the play area so families and children can enjoy this wonderful space now.”

Shafina Cachra, Deputy Headteacher of Eastbury Farm Primary School, said: “The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the journey of revamping the play area. It is an integral part of our school community, with many of our pupils and their families enjoying the space before and after school, as well as on the weekends.

“They were thrilled to hear that the much-loved bear was staying and were honoured to contribute to its new name.  We look forward to our pupils, together with their families, making memories in this wonderful space.”
