Home composting
Home Composting
Although we offer a kerbside collection of garden waste that can be composted in the brown bins we would still encourage you to compost at home. This is because the waste does not have to be transported anywhere and it also provides you with free compost for your garden. You can purchase a range of compost bins, some made from plastic recycled by Local Authorities, at a discounted price from Get Composting.
What can be composted?
More than 30% of household waste can be composted at home. To get the best compost it is best to add an equal mixture of "greens" and "browns".
Greens are wet items such as tea bags, vegetable peelings, grass and fruit.
Browns are dry items such as leaves, dead plants, cardboard and paper.
How long will it take?
It can take between 9 to 12 months to produce compost at home. If the home composter is located in a sunny spot the composting process will happen faster than in a shady location.
Where can I buy compost?
Some of the Recycling Centres sell compost
